When to Change Your Content Strategy

Video filmed for SK Guitars in the Texas Hill Country near San Antonio, highlighting the passion behind one of the region’s most knowledgeable guitar shops.

Stop Over-Planning Your Content. Just Start Filming.

One thing I’ve learned after years of creating content for businesses is this: Most people spend way too much time planning content and not nearly enough time actually creating it. I get it. Strategy matters. But in my experience, the best content rarely comes from a perfectly planned script or storyboard. It comes from real people talking about something they genuinely care about. And the camera simply captures it.

The Guitar Shop That Proved This to Me

I’ll use a guitar shop as an example because it was one of my favorite clients to film for here in the Texas Hill Country. The owner, Ken, ran a shop called SK Guitars. If you’ve ever met someone who truly lives and breathes what they do, that was Ken. The guy knew everything about guitars. History. Tonewoods. Pickups. Vintage models. You name it. And the second the camera turned on, something interesting happened. He didn’t perform. He didn’t “sell.” He just talked about guitars.

Within seconds he forgot the camera was even there. He would zone out and start sharing stories about the instruments he loved, the music that inspired him, and the vision he had for his shop. You couldn’t fake that level of passion if you tried.

The Result? Hundreds of Thousands of Views

The funny part is, we didn’t overthink the content. No massive planning sessions. No complicated strategy decks. We just filmed Ken being Ken. Since then, Ken has moved to Chicago to be closer to his kids, but the videos we made together are still performing online. Some of them have passed half a million views. Every once in a while I’ll get a text from him that says something like: “Mike! Over 400K! I’m blown away bro!”

Nothing makes me happier than seeing people respond to someone’s genuine passion. That’s what audiences connect with. Whether it’s a guitar shop in the Texas Hill Country or a small business in Austin or San Antonio, audiences respond to real people sharing what they love.

Authenticity Beats Strategy Every Time

If you run a business in Austin, San Antonio, or the Texas Hill Country, chances are you’re passionate about what you do. And that’s exactly what your audience wants to see. You don’t need to over-sell your product on social media. People today can spot a fake sales pitch from a mile away. Instead, do something much simpler:

Turn on the camera. Talk about what you love. Share why you do what you do. Authenticity travels farther than any scripted sales message ever will.
