Cold Reading Practice for San Antonio actors

I think it’s a safe assumption that most people believe that creative is subjective. The tricky part about that statement is that everyone thinks their opinion is more important than the next.

We offer on-camera practice several times per week at our actor studio house in San Antonio. We call them, “The Mocks.” Actors show up within that time frame, and work on their audition skills. Actors can bring their own sides, or use side I have at the studio. I think the best way to go about it is to work on the sides cold. Then come back the next day and work on them after you’ve had some time to familiarize yourself with them, think about your choices, then watch back the footage. Here is the calendar.

Watching your footage back is the best practice you can get when it comes to working on your auditions. Whether you’re auditioning in San Antonio, or your submitting self-tapes, we rarely get opportunities to practice. I’m not sure how many cold reading classes there are in San Antonio, but are they on camera? You gotta watch your footage back in order to get better.

When you watch yourself on camera, you see things you normally wouldn’t notice. Maybe you blink too much. Maybe you add a bunch of unnecessary filler words. Whatever you’re doing, you should make sure it’s needed for the character. And most important, drop the ego. I’m the one giving notes, but what I started doing was doing the scene myself, and allowing the other actors to give me notes. This is a great way for you to put on your director hat, and provide feedback that you can apply to your own reads. This also allows me to see the things you see, and ultimately makes me a better director. Everyone wins when you drop the ego.
