Maybe it’s just me, but if I see everyone doing something a certain way, I instinctively try and do it differently. Especially with creative. I love filming for actors in San Antonio. For whatever reason, the vibe is just different here.
I made a video for a guy recently, and someone left a comment on YouTube. He said, “There’s a lot of filler words in this video. You should learn how to speak properly.” Now, a lot of people would look at that comment and say, “How do I fix that?” In my head, I say, “How do we lean into this more?”
If there are filler words, and a bunch of “ahhs” and “ums,” it sounds more authentic. If it’s too rehearsed, it sounds fake. And in the world today, people are craving authenticity. Same goes for acting.
If you’re auditioning for a role, you can very easily make the first choice that comes to your mind. That’s likely the same choice every other actor auditioning for that role is going to make. That means when the casting director or director looks back at the videos, they see the same audition, over and over. Boring.
But what happens when they see something different? Something that pops out at them? They remember you.
You might hear someone say, “Yeah, but the casting director says…”
Great. You’re the one auditioning. Remember, YOUR opinion is what matters most. A good casting director will put ego aside, and guide you. They’ll support your talents. If you commit and feel a particular choice is the way to go, lean in.
