Improv Classes San Antonio

My favorite type of content to film is improv. I love showing up with a group of actors, creating a scenario, and seeing where it goes. Being that the actor studio in San Antonio, has tons of filming options, the creativity possibilities are endless.

Let’s say we have four actors and a restaurant to film in. Instead of writing pages of dialogue, we start with character descriptions and a synopsis. Who are these people? What is the relationship between the four of them? Why are they at this restaurant? Where were they before this scene, and where are they going afterward?

The more specific we get with the characters and their relationships, the easier the dialogue becomes. The actors aren’t trying to remember lines. They’re reacting to each other based on who they are, what they want, and what’s happening in the moment.

I especially like working this way with actors who don’t have a ton of experience yet. Memorized dialogue can sometimes make a newer actor look like they’re delivering lines instead of having a conversation. Improv takes some of that pressure away. If they understand the character and the situation, they can focus more on listening and reacting. The dialogue starts to feel much more natural.

From there, I like to spend about an hour rehearsing. We work through the relationships, motivations, and general direction of the scene—but we don’t lock down the dialogue. Once the camera rolls, we wing it.

For me, that’s one of the most interesting ways to develop a story. You never know exactly what you’re going to get, and sometimes a reaction, pause, or line you never could have written becomes the best moment in the scene.
