On Camera Practice for Actors

There’s a reason actors need to work on camera as much as possible.

Being on camera is not easy. Performing on camera is even harder. And one of the best ways to get more comfortable is to actually watch yourself back. Not in a judgmental way. In a learning way.

You start to notice the little things. Where your eyes go. What your face does when you’re thinking. How stillness reads. How movement reads. What feels natural. What feels forced. The camera tells the truth, and the more you work with it, the less intimidating it becomes.

And the best part is, you don’t need a perfect setup to start. Set up your phone. Call a friend. Read scenes together. Record yourself. Watch it back. Make adjustments. Do it again.

The more reps you get, the more comfortable you become. And comfort on camera gives you more freedom as an actor. That’s really the goal. Not to be perfect. To be present. To be comfortable.
