Self-tapes are a necessary evil.
Personally, I don’t think they can ever completely replace the authenticity of performing in a room, in front of real people. But productions save a ton of time and money by using self-tapes for early audition rounds, so they probably aren’t going anywhere.

This is important. In an in-person audition, you probably aren’t getting four or five takes. But with a self-tape, nobody is standing there waiting for you. Take your time and get a version you’re actually happy with. At Dope Creative Studios, there’s no pressure to nail it immediately. If it takes 47 takes to get one line exactly how you want it, so be it. The goal is to send in your best audition.
Professional Camera, Sound & Lighting
Technology should never outperform the actor, but it’s still nice not to worry about filming everything on your phone.
We shoot our San Antonio self-tapes on a Canon C70 with professional lighting and wireless audio.
We can keep things simple with a clean audition background, or, when appropriate, create an environment that helps the scene feel more natural.
I’m a big believer that you should look and feel like you belong in the scene. If a simple prop, chair, table, or piece of set dressing helps you connect with the material, let’s use it.
Feedback When You Want It
Your opinion of your performance should ultimately matter most, but having another set of eyes can help you discover stronger choices.
Sometimes a small adjustment in pacing, intention, eyeline, or character can completely change a scene.
If you want feedback, we’ll work through it. If you already know exactly what you want to do, we’ll simply help you capture it.
A Stress-Free Environment
This might be the biggest advantage. It’s a self-tape. The whole point is that you don’t have to deal with the pressure of walking into an audition room full of strangers. At Dope Creative Studios, you can show up, hang out, rehearse your lines, and get comfortable before we start recording.
Need 20 minutes to run the scene first? Great. Want to try a completely different choice after watching the first version? Let’s do it. We also edit and send your self-tape the same day. If you need it immediately, we can record it, edit it, and send it to you before you leave.
